HyStock project takes next step with exploratory drilling

This week, Nobian started the first of two exploratory drilling operations in Zuidwending, Groningen, for the HyStock project of Gasunie subsidiary EnergyStock. These so-called evaluation wells are a visible next step in the development of underground hydrogen storage in this area.

Why these wells are necessary

Over the coming months, Nobian will investigate the composition and quality of the salt in the deep subsurface. This information about the subsurface is necessary to determine how the future salt caverns can best be designed for safe and reliable energy storage.
In addition, Nobian will drill a second borehole at location A5. This will prepare the existing cavern to be made suitable for hydrogen storage in the future.

Hydrogen storage of national importance

In the Netherlands, Hynetwork is working on the development of a national hydrogen network. Hydrogen will play an important role in making our energy supply more sustainable. Large-scale underground storage is needed to maintain a good balance between supply and demand.
According to the National Agenda for Underground Hydrogen Storage, multiple caverns are needed for future hydrogen storage. Zuidwending is a logical location for this: the subsurface is suitable and natural gas has been stored there safely since 2012. HyStock will be the first large-scale hydrogen storage project in the Netherlands and will eventually grow to four caverns that will become part of the national hydrogen network.

Care for the environment is key

The work will be carried out with great attention to safety and minimal disruption to local residents. Various measures have been taken, such as monitoring noise and vibrations, constructing a noise barrier, and implementing a traffic plan. We will also remain in close contact with local residents and other stakeholders to answer questions and limit any inconvenience.

What happens next?

The evaluation drilling will take several months. The results will be shared as soon as they are known. Based on these results, a decision will be made on how the storage caverns will be further designed and realized.
